Hi folks... remember Villeroy?
Well, I'm briefly back (have been busy in the past month) and, before I get an idea what other albums to post here (mind you, I already posted most of my trip-hop collection, with a few exceptions far and between), here are two of my most precious trip-hop albums, that I haven't posted until now simply because - and forgive me for this - they are incomplete rips (meaning each of them has one missing song) and I couldn't find a complete rip of them. Nevertheless, as they are, these albums are flawlessly done pearls of trip-hop, with everything from cool beats to lusty female vocals in its right place (today, as I listen less often to trip-hop albums - the irony, huh? -, I rather find these two albums as a bit too straightforward and not experimental enough for my current tastes, but exactly that's why maybe you guys will love them).
A bit of information: Lotus is composed of two of the former members of My Scarlet Life, while Ming features the producer from Earthling, Andy Keep, along the vocalist Jo-Kate. If you haven't heard of My Scarlet Life and/or Earthling yet, search for them.

"Matthew Herbert é múltiplo e inclassificável.

Ele é Herbert, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, Mr. Vertigo, Transformer, and Wishmountain. Cada faceta é única, inconfundível. É pioneiro, visionário e realista. Sua multipersonalidade é evidente pelos trabalhos realizados com Björk, Moloko, R.E.M., Serge Gainsbourg, Róisín Murphy (Moloko), participou da trilhas sonoras para Kristian Levring (uma das figuras mais proeminentes do movimento Dogma 95 de cinema: que conta com nomes como Lars Von Trier, Thomas Vintenberg, entre outros) junto com Harry Gregson-Williams escreveu a trilha sonora para o documentário Life in a Day do Youtube, entre outros projetos que estão enraizados na cultura alternativa do nosso tempo.

No início do ano de 2009 colocou no ar um blog intitulado “This is a Pig” onde prometia acompanhar (e gravar) a vida de um porco, desde seu nascimento até sua morte. Entre diversas controvérsias com protetores de animais que impediam o lançamento do álbum no dia 10 de fevereiro de 2010 ele coloca em seu blog:

Muito se fala sobre este lançamento e desde o dia 12 de outubro está disponível audição em http://www.matthewherbert.com/.

Inevitavelmente críticas serão feitas ao formato e à sonoridade deste álbum experimental e vivo. Mas a capacidade criativa do gênio fica evidente quando percebemos o álbum como um todo, não como músicas independentes que deixamos o “shuffle” fazer o trabalho. As notas crescentes da música “October” deixam claro o surgimento da vida em si e já “December” é um groove Industrial que obviamente antecede o abate. Aliás o abate ele não pode nem presenciar e nem mesmo gravar.

Outro dado curioso é que na bateria a exemplo, foi utilizado pele de porco, nos instrumentos de sopro foi utilizado sangue suíno (vide “February”). E foi também criado um novo instrumento a base de sangue (também do porco escolhido por ele).

Controvérsias a parte, toda a obra de Matthew Herbert (seja lá como ele prefere ser chamado) é genial, inovadora e nos faz refletir os aspectos e a musicalidade da vida contemporânea."

The Q4 is a collaboration of three young Dutch producers: Arts the Beatdoctor, Sense and STW. Who, though they all work in rather similar ways, have a unique sound of their own. The (at the time 4 men) crew was formed in a sleazy, dark bar in Amsterdam during the fourth quarter of 2005; And have since then created an impressive amount of material together, coloured by a wide
range of musical influences and artistic collaborations. As apposed to continually repeating a loop, theQ4 compose their tracks practically note-by-note by making collages of hundreds of dusty little samples and percussion hits taken from vinyl. O compositor inglês Barry Adamson, tocou baixo no grupo punk Magazine e após a separação da banda em 81, ingressou no The Bad Seeds. Resolveu seguir carreira solo, como os compositores de filmes John Barry, Ennio Morricone e Bernard Herrmann. Escreveu jazz instrumental e lançou o EP "The Man With The Golden Arm", inspirado em James Bond e seu primeiro álbum "Moss Side Story" de 89 sobre os piores bairros de Manchester, tinha abordagem obscura e era tema para um filme inexistente. Seus experimentos misturando punk, guitarra e outros elementos, abriram seu caminho e no nos anos 90 fez trilhas para filmes como "Desilusion" e "Gas Food Lodging". Começou a ser requisitado por vários diretores e foi comparado à Ennio Morricone. De volta ao trabalho solo, fez "Soul Murder" de 92 com ska, eletrônica e orquestra e "The Negro Inside Me" de 93 misturava hip hop, pop francês, jazz e funk. Com "Oedipus Schmoedipus", revisitou o lado obscuro de "Moss Side Story" e tinha Nick Cave, Billy MacKenzie e Jarvis Coker. Don't confuse this band - Ilya, also known as San Ilya - with another trip-hop band called Ilya, the one which released Poise Is The Greater Architecture which is closer to shoegazer/alt. rock.

This band, however, has a poignant jazzy twist, though the female vocals won't be appreciated by everyone. Nevertheless, it has an atmosphere of it's own. Ilya have released other 2-3 albums in the meantime. I will upload some other releases too, soon.

Market were an elusive trip-hop band that made this self-titled debut album back in 1998, but they disbanded right before the release of the album. However, it got leaked onto the Internet, until it was eventually self-released by the band members on CD and LP.

It is by not any means original, but there are a couple of more than decent songs (especially M6) for those who don't mind a rather "cookie cutter" sound. Anyway, this album is rare and hard-to-google.

For your info, Genesis P-Orridge was one of the founding members of the legendary band Throbbing Gristle. Don't expect anything too experimental here though: like the "cover art", the music is striped down almost to basic. Spoken word pieces put down to dark and mellow beats - that's how you could describe it. It is a grower though - if you have patience for more than one listen.

This very rare/obscure album, Rock Oil by Lascelles, is one of the most experimentalist I heard in trip-hop. It is very curious that it was released in 1996 - only 2 years after Portishead's Dummy and Massive Attack's Protection! You could describe it as "more historically important than pleasant to listen to" - unlike some 1998-1999 albums which manage to pull off a completely experimental trip-hop style, Lascelles just alternate between somewhat straightforward trip-hop and crazy melt moments. Summer heat has arrived even for me, so time for something more chilled out and more jazzy! Of course, the self-titled debut album from Loopless does not fit the trip-hop bill - it is acid jazz/downtempo affair all the way, but a good one. Although subtle, there is a difference in quality between Loopless and the generation of mostly half-baked cookie-cutter ”tripjazzhop” freely streamable on Last.fm... Of course, I am just making generalisations. The band was shortly-lived, but apparently not completely forgotten.
